The three high schoolers are all studying at the same college, but they live in entirely different worlds. Prem (Prem Nath), Umair (Umair Jaswal), and Anjali (Anjali Patwardhan) are very different people with their own ambitions and skills, but they share a love for surfing. In the first scene of the film, Umair has found a book on surfing by a powerful Indian surfer called Manav. This inspires him to take up surfing as a sport and also to study the art of surfing more carefully. After some time, Umair is accepted into a local surfing school and is taken under wing by a longtime local surfer called Papa Doodh. In addition to refining his own surfing skills, Umair also takes an interest in his two friends' futures as students. Anjali dreams of becoming a lawyer while Prem wants to become something more prominent in society, such as an engineer or filmmaker. Although Anjali is in the same college, she is involved in a different group than Prem and Umair. She seems to be more interested in building her own social network than taking part in the outdoor activities that her friends are so fond of. Anjali is seen walking with one of her new friends, Megha (Megha Nayyar), during one scene in the movie. However, it is also clear that she has some kind of connection to Prem and Umair's world as well. At many points during Shaapit , she dresses up like them and takes part in their activities even when there are no plans for an outing. Prem, on the other hand, is a very determined individual. He works hard in school and is eager to succeed as an engineer. He has been accepted at a university in Mumbai where his father works as a professor. At some point during the film, he mentions to Umair that he wants to work as a cameraman for Bollywood movies some day. While many of his classmates are interested mainly in playing cricket or relaxing over the weekends, Prem spends most of his free time studying for upcoming tests or thinking about what classes he can take at night to learn more about photography and cinematography. Being the most experienced of the three friends, Umair shows Prem how to improve his skills on various occasions throughout the movie. No matter how bad the conditions are, Umair still manages to find a way to surf on some of the roughest waves in India. Prem is amazed by his friend's skills and decides to take up surfing as his hobby. Although he does not have much money at first, Prem spends some of it on equipment that will help him improve his surfing skills more quickly. The third character, Anjali, is also very different from her friends. She has started making plans for her future while they are still in high school.
